How do *you* stop procrastinating?
For two days now I’ve been procrastinating, paralyzed, putting off my prospectus revision. It is due to the department tomorrow, and it feels too big. I can’t even get myself to open the proper documents, because it feels impossible to pull it all together by tomorrow.
Intead
I’ve been looking at houses online, reading Cary Tennis columns on Salon, (re)reading e-mails, watching Clancy’s “take” on Take 20, rearranging my netflix queue, getting cups of coffee and cappucinos, writing silly blog posts, reading articles on Kurt Vonnegut. I need to
stop.
But how?

just one paragraph, just one sentence that needs clarification: start with just one. maybe one is all you can do today.
you’ll address another small issue in the morning.
do 1 small thing at a time.
it’s due tomorrow? so what. enough of it will get done by the time it needs to be done.

I agree with Chris. If I have to start a paper, if I can just open up a fresh document and write my name at the top, somehow it helps me begin.
P.S. I miss Kurt already…

Good luck with your work.

you have to all of those life-things. but you should probably, since you’re already reflective about procrastinating, compel yourself to make a schedule. start small. say, “i will work for 2 hours on Thursday and 2 more on Tuesday,” and then break up those 2 hours as you see fit (but, i’ve found that once i commit to ONLY 2 hours, i just sit there and focus on that one project for 2 hours rather than breaking it up). when i really need to get a project moving, this helps me. good luck.

Hi, I just found you through Chris. How do I *stop* procrastination? It depends on what I have to do, but I typically make piles of work. Really. I find that if I’m organized, I get more done. If I’m really putting things off, I’ll clean off my desk. It seems to make me *want* to get work done.
